RBA in China

The Norwegian Business Delegation to China April 2017, headed by Prime Minister Mrs Erna Solberg and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Børge Brende with Innovation Norway as facilitator, was an important dialogue opener between the two countries. RBA Senior Advisor Gunelie Winum was part of the delegation.

Gunelie who has trained about 1000 Chinese factory managers on decent work and social dialogue, advocated for the need to shift from inspections to capacity build factory management and workers in meeting international expectations.

E.g the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights which is endorsed by both China and Norway states that all companies are expected to contribute to and/or establish operational-level grievance mechanisms. She emphasized that this is fully possible also in China. Evidence shows that such measures actually also has a business benefit. Chinese factory managers challenged with hight staff turnover understands this. Norwegian companies should also understand the possibilities and benefits thereof.
